WW #38: 144.8 (Shew… the scale went up for a little bit this week, but I recovered.)
While talking about New Year’s Eve with some friends yesterday, we stumbled upon on the topic of resolutions. One friend says that she NEVER makes them… in fact, she never makes goals period. She hates the word goal so much that she almost quit a job over it once because they made her make some. And we are talking about a functional human being here, not someone you’d ever guess had any kind of commitment issues. Another friend chimed in quickly with the same feelings and said that she likes to use the word thoughts instead of resolutions b/c it makes it less intimidating. So on New Year’s Eve, she is going to have some 2011 thoughts.
I’m sure a lot of people are afraid to make resolutions, because what could be worse than letting yourself down? That’s pretty intense. I get it 100%.
Then the conversation turned to me. One of them said that I seemed like the type of person that wouldn’t go back on a goal even if I had changed my mind about it. She is totally right. While I am able to let some things go, it’s still really hard for me to break a deal with myself. Maybe I should resolve to be more flexible.
While some of us will resolve to do more, and some of us to do less, I think it is important to resolve to do something. It’s always important to think about how you can make your life better. There is no better time than the present, New Year’s or otherwise!
One of the girls in our conversation let me share her NYE resolutions from 2009 on the basis that I keep her anonymous. :D Some she kept, some she was nowhere near keeping. She even wrote the same things over and over again in the hopes it would help make them more likely happen. It’s not that her goals were funny, but the way she wrote them was very Bridget Jones. We all shared a good laugh while reading them! Something about writing things that are only meant for yourself to see can seem so serious when you look back at it.

Personally, I think the trick to goal-setting (and hopefully reaching) is to revisit them often.
You can start off with the best of intentions, but sometimes life circumstances get in the way, or you realize a goal isn’t a priority, or another opportunity presents itself.
I set my goals on 1/1 but try to fine-tune them on a monthly basis.
One of my resolutions for next year is to read your blog on a regular basis!

Good idea – I like the thought of reevaluating on a monthly basis. Life is constantly changing, so our goals should to.
And… I am so excited that I made your resolution list!!!
See you in 2011!

Whenever I set a goal for myself (or even have an idea I come up with on my own), I find it nearly impossible to go back on it. It works out pretty well when you’re trying to exercise/lose weight. Not so much when you come up with a clunker of an idea and you force it into working when you’re doing a creative writing assignment.
