Today is my 800th post!!! Blows my mind a little. Thank you for going on this journey with me.
After two days as a vegan, my hat goes off to those of you who do it on a consistent basis for long periods of time. I love the idea and message behind avoiding animal products, but it certainly isn’t an easy thing to do. I love dairy and eggs too much to give them up. It was nice to learn though what vegan truly is and maybe I will have a vegan meal from time to time. It definitely wasn’t hard to get enough protein, but I think I would have to learn a lot more to make sure I didn’t deprive myself of other key nutrients. The creativity behind going vegan is another really cool aspect of their way of life. It forces you to think, if I can’t eat this… then what can I use in its place? It opens up a whole new world of food products and tastes from things you might never use, like coconut. I also learned that some things were never meant to be vegan, like mac ‘n cheese. I’m sure my vegan friends would beg to differ, so I’m open to trying new things as opportunities present themselves. If this past week did anything for me though, it reminded me how easy it is to go vegetarian. While I probably won’t go back to that way of life in the near future, I do plan to cut a lot of meat out of my diet in general. I read something yesterday that said having more of a plant-based diet significantly lowers your risk for most cancers. That’s enough to make me want to eat more veggies.
Today also marks 21 days without alcohol, which I probably enjoyed the most. It was certainly hard to do on weekends and at social events with friends, but it got easier with time. My friend Chez suggested ordering a club soda with lime when out just to have something in your hand. That’s a great calorie-free suggestion that really works! I’m thinking that it might be fun to go without alcohol for an entire month each year, inspired by a comment in an earlier post this week. Thanks for all of the ideas!
It will be nice to not have any challenges for a little while and go forth with my new lessons learned. Fridays are always such a wonderful day with so much to look forward to. I hope your weekend is splendid! See you on Monday.
