Weigh-In Wednesday #51 – 147.2

Yesterday was a very, very special day… because I RAN for the first time in 5 1/2 weeks (7 1/2 weeks since becoming injured).  It wasn’t on the ground or a normal treadmill, but on an anti-gravity machine that took off about 30% of my weight.  I ran for 10 minutes at 6 mph, and it felt WONDERFUL!!!  I was so nervous to get on it at first, b/c it would have been devastating if it hurt me in any way.  The first minute or so on the machine was a little strange, and I could feel my knee adjusting to carrying weight again… if that makes any sense.  But after that first 60 seconds, it felt good as gold.  I’ve also been cleared for elliptical machine workouts on my own for up to 45 minutes.  WOOHOO!!!!  That’s also huge news.  During my next session this Thursday I’m going to ask about riding my bike this weekend.  Honestly, if I hadn’t been able to do something with my legs this week (besides strength train & water jog), I would have seriously started to doubt the ability to participate in the Half Ironman next month.  But not only is it healing fast, looks like I won’t need an injection either!  That is just amazing, amazing news.  I’ve worked really hard while being extremely careful, so looks like that patience has finally paid off.  GO MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!  I needed that rush of positive energy yesterday.  🙂
 
I want to give you a quick idea of how the anti-gravity machine works before leaving you for today.  They had me put on these super tight shorts that stretched from around the knee to my waist. Once you step into the treadmill, you zip the top of your shorts on to the enclosure of the “air bubble”.  The machine then fills up with air several times, determining your weight and adjusting for the settings.  It was really strange when it lifted me off of the ground those few times and made my heart flutter a little.  🙂  Once it was finished, I turned the speed up gradually just to get a feel for it.  It felt just like running, but without about 45 pounds.  I wondered to myself if this is what it’d feel like if I was a smaller person.  I know people in that training room thought I was nuts b/c of my excitement.  I was clapping & cheering myself on.  😀   My physical therapist’s trainer has become a good friend of mine, so she snapped the photo below for me.  It’s a moment I will never forget!!!
